While hand sanitizers should not be used in place of good old fashioned soap and water they are great in a pinch if you don’t have access to wash your hands. Here is a list of hand sanitizers made in the USA that adhere to CDC guidelines. Note that recently the FDA recalled over 65 hand sanitizers made in Mexico because they contained methanol which is toxic and can be deadly.
What you should know about hand sanitizers:
- Hand Sanitizer should be made with least 60% alcohol.
- Always buy a made in USA hand sanitizer rather than imported hand sanitizers.
- Hand sanitizers do not remove all germs.
- Hand sanitizers are not a substitute for hand washing but are useful when soap and water isn’t available.
- In order for hand sanitizer to be effective you need to make sure you apply it like you would soap getting your wrists, palms, knuckles, and fingernail beds. Covering all surfaces until your hands fell dry (at least 20 seconds).
