Sweethearts candy conversation hearts have been a Valentine’s tradition since I was a kid. Every year I looked forward to getting a box of pastel colored hearts emblazoned with terms of endearment such as: Love Ya, Be Mine, Kiss Me, You Rock, Tweet Me and more.
This iconic candy has been manufactured in the USA for over 100 years. Unfortunately when the New England Confectionery Company went bankrupt in 2018 production of these timeless treats stopped and many thought that would be the end of Sweethearts. Fortunately, Spangler Candy Company based in Ohio acquired both the Sweethearts and Necco brands in the fall of 2018 and announced that Sweethearts will be relaunched for the 2020 Valentine season. Necco wafers will be available sometime in 2019.
In the meantime, if you can’t wait until 2020 to express your feelings with handfuls of tiny candy hearts this Valentine’s Day you can purchase Brach’s conversation hearts Made in Mexico.
Of course if you prefer to buy candy Made in the USA you can make do this year by texting, tweeting, writing memes or saying it with a heart shaped cookie this Valentine’s Day instead.
